Every week in the WeWriWa blog hop, writers post 8-10 sentences from one of their books. Last week my snippet ended with Christian accusing Grit of still being under the influence of the demon Haylen after he said he understood his former master’s desire for revenge. This snippet picks up with Grit’s response.
“Maybe, but I’ve often wondered about your dedication to the rebellion,” Grit replied holding Christian’s belligerent gaze. “You seem like the kind of guy who’s not just in this because you’re idealistic. I think it’s personal for you.”
“My reasons are none of your damn business.”
Maddy held up a hand and said loudly, “It’s personal for all of us. Fighting among ourselves won’t help and I agree with Grit. Haylen had reason to seek justice, but he made it revenge instead. He reanimated corpses — soulless minions. He allowed the raiders’ evil to infect him and he ultimately became worse than them. He sacrificed his soul for vengeance and became a demon.”
About Fangs and Fists: Grit
(Erotic Paranormal Romance)
Werewolf gladiator Grit faced his own mortality in the arena, only to be resurrected by a demon. Grit now lives a shadowy existence as one of the soulless, remembering only bits and pieces of his former life. Nonetheless, he recognizes evil and knows he must fight for the future of his young son, as well as the rest of the world.
Zari, a vampire warrior, helped Grit escape the tower where he had been imprisoned. She had feelings for Grit when they’d first met, but at the time he had been mated to another wolf. Now that he’s on his own, they’re free to explore their feelings as they fight side by side as part of the rebellion against the demons. In the midst of war, their love grows, but danger is everywhere.
Haylen, the demon who resurrected Grit, offers a bargain that may save or destroy the rebellion. Whatever the outcome, Zari and Grit intend to face it together and explore the once forbidden passion between them.

Sounds like they’re all treading in a tricky and dangerous situation.
This is a great condemnation of what revenge can do to a person — turn them into what they’re supposedly fighting against.
I agree with your comments. Revenge can cause dangerous results.
Revenge is never the correct answer. It has a slippery slope that most people don’t think about–and we see where it got Haylen.
I’m glad this group has a rational mind to talk the characters out of being blinded by revenge.
Hi, Amy. In this case, she’s rational, but later some might argue about her decisions. 🙂
Sounds like things got out of control for Haylen.
Hard to picture soulless minions – I see the little yellow guys from the movie. LOL
Tweeted.
Hi Jenna. You’re right it can be dangerous. This was challenging for me to write because in certain cases I’m perfectly fine with revenge. To me one of the things that’s both difficult and satisfying about creating characters is making sure that I let them be who they are and not impose my beliefs on them. Not always easy. 🙂
You’re right, Ed. In some cases, like this one, it can happen.
LOL, Daryl! If only Haylen’s minions were that cute. 🙂
Group dynamics are always tricky; throw in a demon and you’ve got real problems!
Sometimes there’s just the finest line between justice and revenge. Great snippet!
It’s been said that when fighting monsters one needs to take care not to become a monster themselves. A desire for revenge can make anyone a monster.
