Welcome to the WeWriWa blog hop in which writers post 8-10 sentences from one of their books. Over the past few weeks, my snippets have focused on Haylen’s backstory and why he became a demon. This scene skips ahead. The Alpha’s plan to lure Haylen has worked so far, and the demon has ordered Grit to meet him at an abandoned church. He arrives with an army of the soulless. Grit enters, wondering if the Alpha has arranged for enough backup, considering the number of soulless at Haylen’s command.
Haylen stood in front of the crushed altar. The red tattoos shone like blood on his pale, smooth head. In his long, black coat with a mandarin-collared shirt beneath, he looked like a warped clergyman leading his zombie church.
“Welcome, Grit,” Haylen said, opening his arms in a gesture of greeting.
Grit took a tentative step over the threshold, and then he stopped again, his heartbeat quickening. Once inside, he might not emerge again — at least not in the same state. He’d struggled to regain his free will and had no desire to have it torn from him again.
“Closer, please,” Haylen said.
Please. The demon had never used niceties when issuing orders, but Grit sensed it wasn’t a command.
About Fangs and Fists: Grit
(Erotic Paranormal Romance)
Werewolf gladiator Grit faced his own mortality in the arena, only to be resurrected by a demon. Grit now lives a shadowy existence as one of the soulless, remembering only bits and pieces of his former life. Nonetheless, he recognizes evil and knows he must fight for the future of his young son, as well as the rest of the world.
Zari, a vampire warrior, helped Grit escape the tower where he had been imprisoned. She had feelings for Grit when they’d first met, but at the time he had been mated to another wolf. Now that he’s on his own, they’re free to explore their feelings as they fight side by side as part of the rebellion against the demons. In the midst of war, their love grows, but danger is everywhere.
Haylen, the demon who resurrected Grit, offers a bargain that may save or destroy the rebellion. Whatever the outcome, Zari and Grit intend to face it together and explore the once forbidden passion between them.

A warped clergyman leading his zombie church. I love this line!
Seems like this situation could go very wrong.
Wow! I agree with Jessica. Zombies and all.
Great tense impasse between two powerful beings. He’s right to be worried but can he succeed without taking the considered risk?
I’m thinking this might be a bad idea. Love the description of Haylen.
I like the push/pull of emotion in this snippet, as well as the vivid details. Really well done, makes me want to keep reading for sure!
Great description of the demon! Tread carefully Grit.
I really loved the ‘warped clergyman’ line, too! Great details and description throughout this very enjoyable excerpt!
Like everyone else – the warped clergyman line is fabulous.
Tweeted.
A polite demon is still a demon, right? So does it really matter if he asks nicely?
Yep, the wrapped clergyman line is wonderful.
I’d be real leery of going forward, too. Haylen’s description is creepy. Good job.
A lot of emotion in this snippet and you pulled me right into the scene, making me want more.
Great imagery! Yep, love the clergyman line too.
