Interview with Preston Lowe
Where are you from?
I was born in Denver, Colorado, and lived there until I graduated high school and was accepted at the Hawthorne Point Military Academy in Charleston, South Carolina.
What is your job?
I’m in my last year at Hawthorne Point Military Academy. I can’t wait to graduate and pursue the career I’ve wanted since I can remember. I always wanted to be a soldier, but because my mom wouldn’t let me enlist with my friends, I applied to the military academy. One way or the other, I was going to be a soldier.
Are you a people person or a lone wolf?
I always thought of myself as a people person until my first year at the academy. The competition is stiff and the attrition rate high. I worked hard to stay in and did better than I expected, but I can’t let up for a minute. These guys and gals are used to being the best and will do whatever it takes to win. Not everyone can be a winner, but I’ve done all right.
Who is your greatest enemy and why?
I never thought I had an enemy, but one crept up on me. The first time I discovered this enemy was when I was training for a marathon. It was minor at first, and I ignored it. When training at the academy, you get used to pain. But then the pain increased and wouldn’t go away. Now what do I do? If I have it checked at the campus clinic, my visit will be reported to administration. The academy doesn’t have room for imperfection. If they think I’m imperfect, there goes a lifetime goal. I’ve seen it happen to others. It won’t happen to me.
Who is your closest friend?
Ed Reick has been my friend since day one at the academy. Ed will make a good soldier, but when it comes to women … let’s just say he’d rather meet marauding terrorists than talk to a girl. The girls don’t notice Ed until they discover who is family is, then they form a line to get to know him better. It’s enough to confuse the poor guy.
Who is your love interest?
Who has time for a love interest? I thought I didn’t, until one night at Charleston’s trendy nightclub, I saw Willow Dockery, a barmaid with more sass than my sister’s Arabian stallion. When some guy harassed her, I told him to leave her alone. The flash in her eyes made me want to know her better. It’s short term. I’ll be leaving soon. I’ll never see Willow.
