Spirits of Christmas (Wild Witches of Beaver Bay)
by Kate Hill
(Holiday Romance, Paranormal Romance)
Blurb
On Christmas Eve twenty-five years ago, a brutal murder was committed at the house where Christa Wild works as a live-in maid. When the other servants leave for the holiday this year she stays behind, hoping that any spirits dwelling there will help her regain the psychic power she lost. She’s surprised when the intriguing but disturbed owner of the house appears several days before Christmas.
Action star Joel Connor has kept a terrible secret for most of his life. Despite his success as an athlete and actor, he is plagued by flashbacks of a gruesome attack that destroyed his family. This Christmas, Joel returns to the house where it happened to face the ghosts of the past, but finds he is not alone.
Joel and Christa are instantly attracted, but will his psychological state prevent them from finding peace and love?
Excerpt:
In her room down the hall, she pulled out her cell phone and dialed her cousin’s phone number.
“Hey, Christa. How are you doing, girl?”
“Trinity! I’m so glad you picked up. I just did a bad thing and I can’t tell my mother.”
“How old are we now? Twenty-seven?”
“Quit the sarcasm. I’m serious here.”
“What happened?”
Christa quickly explained about Joel, leaving out the part that he was a famous actor. She had told him that she wouldn’t tell anyone about his personal life, and that definitely included blurting out to her cousin what color underwear he wore.
“So you went through all this guy’s personal shit because you think he’s a junkie? Christa, take my advice and get the hell out of that house.”
“You’ve been talking to my mother.”
“My advice has nothing to do with the fact that three people were butchered there and their spirits might not be friendly. Think about your situation. You don’t know anything about this guy, except that you think he’s sick.”
“He can’t be sick. He’s gone out running. That’s another thing, Trin. Why would he go for a run at this time of night in the snow unless he’s desperate?”
“I don’t know. Jeff will work out any chance he gets, day or night.”
Jeff was Trinity’s husband and a pretty exceptional guy.
“Jeff probably isn’t the best example, Trin.”
“I’m just sayin’. Some people work out to clear their head, you know, like we do yoga? Not that I’m an expert, but from what you told me, it sounds like your boss might have panic attacks.”
“Panic attacks. I hadn’t thought of that.”
“Yeah. You said he’s fine one minute and then sort of freaks out.”
“He doesn’t freak out. He just got really pale a few times and he was sweating for no reason. I mean the house isn’t super hot. In the kitchen, he looked almost — zoned out or scared or something.”
“Maybe he has issues. Lots of people have anxiety.”
Though Joel seemed collected enough, it wasn’t a super stretch of the imagination to believe he had anxiety. He seemed really tense or intense. He’d never been to the house before, and neither she nor any member of staff, except probably Frank, had known Joel Connor even owned the house. What if he’d come here to sort out problems, or to relax? Not only had she searched through his stuff, but she’d probably ruined his private time, too.

Fascinating setup. Love the thought of a psychic trying to regain lost powers.Great snippet
Awkwardness sets up a great conflict. 🙂 Interesting story so far!
This is a great book. Enjoyed it
Excellent way to use a friend’s common sense to change the heroine’s attitude from suspicion to compassion.
He’s quite a mystery to her. Since she’s already searched his things, I’d guess she’s going to try to solve him.
Love the cover and excerpt!
