With so few hours in the day, everyone wants to make the most of their leisure time. Sometimes the only time I get to read is during a lunch break, so I want the story to be something I really enjoy. I’m looking for one that takes me away from reality for a while. I usually read my favorite genres because it’s more of a guarantee that I’ll enjoy what I’m reading, however sometimes by not trying something new, I might be missing out on a great book.
To me, reading outside my comfort zone means choosing books that aren’t within my favorite genres. I recently found out about a reading challenge called Romanceopoly. To me, it sounded like a great way to push myself into reading genres I wouldn’t normally choose. So far I’ve read some mystery-type stories–a genre that is rarely on my reading list.
I can’t say that I’ve changed my reading taste, but it’s been nice trying something different.
What type of reading is outside your comfort zone, and do you sometimes challenge yourself to choose books you wouldn’t normally read? To find out how other authors feel about reading outside their comfort zone, please stop here.

I use to stick to romance but founc I love romantic suspense and cozy mystery by stepping out of my comfort zone. Now I found lots of new authors I love
In January I signed up for a Reading Challenge. I plan on getting a little out of my comfort zone during the challenge. Books that scare me to death with blood and guts are out of my comfort zone. They won’t be on my challenge list. I’ve never heard of Romanceoply. I’ll check it out. Thanks, Kate.
You’re right that there is so little time in the day. So why waste it on something you don’t enjoy. While I tend to stay with genres I enjoy, I still step out once in a while when I win a book.
I like just about any type of romance. Fantasy is outside my comfort zone. And I’m not one to pick up sci-fi usually. But I do it now and then and have enjoyed the adventure. However, if I have only short times to read, like you, I try to fill it with what I really enjoy.
