2020 was a challenge for just about everyone. There were losses and struggles for so many people, but hopefully there are some good memories, too.
Like lots of people, I was dealing with several personal and family issues and trying to figure out what that meant for my writing journey. Did I want to continue it, and if I did, how?
Writing hasn’t been profitable for me for over a decade. Like many, I have a full time job to pay the bills. Writing has always been a lifestyle for me and so much a part of who I am that I’m not sure I could ever stop completely, but is it something I want to keep doing on a schedule and on someone else’s terms? Don’t get me wrong. Working with publishers has been a rewarding experience, and I’m grateful for the opportunities I’ve had. I’ve met some fantastic, talented people and have learned a lot, but after thinking long and hard, I decided to revisit why I started writing in the first place. It was because I enjoyed it, and I told the stories I wanted to read.
In 2021, I plan to continue doing that. I still have stories to share and others that are more personal, but none will get written if I don’t take the time to focus on them. I have a backlist of books that I hope to re-edit and independently publish in a way that’s closer to my original plan for them. Though I love erotic romance, sometimes a story doesn’t need multiple explicit sex scenes. Sometimes as an author I would like to focus more on the characters and plotline than on whether I’ll have to cut scenes to make room for additional sex. On the other hand, sometimes the characters are all about sex, and that’s fantastic when it works.
My stories have always been a little unusual, so they don’t draw a big audience. That’s okay, because I prefer to write what I want to read, and if someone else enjoys it, too, then that’s great!
My main goal is to continue writing what I love and sharing it with others who might enjoy it, too.
Aside from writing and revisiting older books, I’m planning to share more on this blog, like movie recommendations and other things that might or might not relate to books.
I hope 2021 is better all around for everyone, and whatever your hopes, dreams, and plans, I hope they all work out for you and you have a happy, healthy new year!
