This snippet is from my collection of short horror stories and poetry Country Whispers. Specifically, it’s from a story called Pig Roast.
I hope you enjoy it. Thank you for stopping by!
One weekend on a much-needed day off, Shell stopped at a consignment shop while on the lookout for a decent couch at a fair price. She noticed a tarnished genie lamp and bought it on a whim.
When she brought it home and started polishing it, to her surprise out popped the man of her dreams.
Tall, dark, and bearded, the genie stared at her with boredom in his slanted amber eyes.
“Three wishes, mortal. Let’s get on with it. How much, what kind of mansion, and how famous do you want to be?” He snapped his bejeweled fingers as he spoke.
Her heart still pounding from fright, Shell squeaked, “What?”
And here is a bit more, if you would like to read it:
The genie sighed and placed his hands on his narrow hips. “Your three wishes. What do you desire?”
“Three wishes. I’d ask if this is for real, but considering you just popped out of a lamp, it’s safe to say I’m not imagining this?”
“Nor do you appear intoxicated. Perhaps a stiff drink, as you mortals say, will speed this along?”
“No,” Shell said softly. She wasn’t going to waste a wish on a mere drink. “This is going to take some thought.”
The genie’s brow furrowed. He looked surprised. “You mean you truly don’t know what you want?”
“I know what I want, but I’m not sure who to inflict it on—yet.”

Uh oh. I think a wish made out of anger — which is what this promises to be — may not have good consequences.
Now that’s an unexpected twist! Revenge is sweet . . . perhaps.
Great last line. Totally intrigued. Its only there do we realize something is amiss.
Oh my! Giving life to tightly held anger could lead to all sorts of trouble.
Uh oh, ominous…but fun. I love genie stories. Great snippet1
Oh, that last line is very intriguing! It sounds ominous, but it could be good. Right?
Well, that took a dark twist! I like the no-nonsense attitude of the genie.
Well, this took quite a turn at the very last moment. Even the genie was surprised! Now I’ve got to know more!
Well this appears to be a new experience for the genie. I’m thinking the new lamp owner has some anger issues. Looking forward to reading about them. 🙂
Love his ennui. I’ll bet she’s really going to surprise him.
