A person who has inspired me all my life has been my Dad. He grew up in a lower-income family without a father present. He also had learning disabilities in a time when such disabilities weren’t recognized. He didn’t finish school at the time, but joined the Marine Corps at seventeen. After receiving an honorable discharge, he met my mother and married her not long after. Despite not having a high school diploma, he became a self-employed painting contractor and provided very well for his family, even sending me to private school so that I could have the advantages he didn’t have. (Not that Mum didn’t give up a lot, as well, to allow me to do that!) Never a guy to give up, he eventually earned his GED by going to night school while supporting our family.
Everyone has certain disadvantages and no one has a perfect life, but my father has never let his problems get him down. The past few years he has handled his many health problems with the same never-give-up attitude. He has proved to me that you can be successful even without a degree, and you can be a responsible, loving father even if you didn’t have one of your own.
