It’s Wednesday and time for the Book Hooks Blog Hop. During the hop, authors share excerpts from their books.
This week I’m backtracking a little. Over the past few weeks, the excerpts I’ve posted from my science fiction romance Warrior Priest have been from a scene in which they’ve questioned their beliefs while in a “magical” cave. This week, the excerpt takes place after their shuttle has been shot down on their way to her home planet. They’ve crashed in a forest and have been trying to avoid their enemies. In this scene, they’ve just reached the cave.
Don’t forget to check out more excerpts from authors in the MFRW Book Hooks Blog Hop.
Thank you for stopping by!
Warrior Priest:
by Kate Hill
Science Fiction Romance
They ran until they reached the mouth of the cave. While she caught her breath, he used Ari Marc’s old device to scan the area.
She cast him an annoyed glance. Even the first aid kit and travel bag, neither of which were heavy, felt like they weighed a ton. She considered herself in good shape, but she was winded. Despite running while carrying gear in the heat of the jungle, not to mention his fresh wound and chopping through vines, the warrior priest had barely taken a deep breath. At least he was sweating as much as she was.
“Are we being followed?” she asked.
“No. Not yet. A while back it looked like the wrist device picked up a shuttle landing, but we lost the signal. With any luck, they’ll look for us in some other direction.”
Thunder clapped so loudly that Selena jumped, her heart racing.
“Come on.” He took two battery operated torches from his gear and handed one to her. “The natural elements in the cave kill our signals, though. Once we’re inside, even this old wrist device will be useless, but so will our enemies’ tech, if they happen to have any that works here. Kimbrian soldiers usually have state of the art tech. Now move.”
“How about ‘let’s go’ or ‘are you ready?”
“What?” He stared at her, his lip curled.
“In case you’ve forgotten, I’m not one of your subordinates. You keep giving me orders.”
His dark eyes flashed. “I’m thinking fast so we can stay safe. Sorry if I’ve offended you, priestess. Are you ready to move or do you want to stay here and wait for them to find us?”
“You know, if it wasn’t against my religion, I could very easily hate you sometimes.”
To her surprise, he looked amused.
Blurb:
What happens when a warrior priest from a strict religion meets a free-spirited priestess from a new age commune?
Jade and Selena are as different as two people can be, but to facilitate an alliance between their worlds, they engage in a cultural exchange. With their galaxy in danger from a planet that wants to conquer or destroy all others, they realize the importance of their assignment, but it is difficult for a warrior priest and a nonviolent priestess to understand each other.
Selena is both attracted and appalled by his old school masculinity, and Jade is tempted to break his vow of celibacy until marriage due to his powerful desire for her. Will this unlikely pair not only find common ground, but unconditional love?
