I’m feeling a little nostalgic, so this week’s list is stories and plays I read and loved back in my school days – mandatory stories, not personally chosen ones.
- Bridge to Terabithia
- Island of the Blue Dolphins
- The Diary of Anne Frank
- The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
- Wuthering Heights
- The Scarlet Letter
- The Once and Future King
- The Great Gatsby
- The Tell-Tale Heart
- Hop-Frog
- The Necklace
- An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge
- The Crucible
What were some of your favorite stories read in school?

Island of the Blue Dolphins is still one of my favorite books. I also enjoyed the Black Beauty books when I was younger. Bambi (the original, not the Disney version) was one of the first books I read and was far too young to be reading it (I was in the first grade). Alas, Babylon by Pat Frank was one of my favorite reads in high school.
I read all in the Narnia series out loud to my sons when they were young. The Lord of the Rings series too. I remember reading McBeth, Romeo and Juliet and Of Mice and Men.
Island of the Blue Dolphins I remember vaguely. Other than that, I’ve only read two on your list, 9 and 11. 11 was when I was home schooling my children, as it was in the text book we used. None of the others were school reading books. Mandatory reading in school were the same books they still use. I think they need to update their reading lists, as I don’t think kids can relate to some of them now.
