Warrior Priest

“Hey, Selena, I’m sorry I can’t finish the assignment,” Franklin said, his words slow and his expression dazed from medication.
“Don’t worry about it.” She patted his shoulder.
“They’re sending another guard?”
“The world leader wanted to, but I told her it’s not necessary. I feel quite safe with Ari Jade, providing that works for you, Jade?”
He glanced at her, a strange feeling in his gut. She trusted him enough to be alone for the rest of their visit, even after he’d brought her to this island where she’d nearly been killed.
“I’ll guard you with my life.”
She held his gaze. “I know that. And it’s a sign of good faith on both our parts.”
Jade nodded.
Two doctor’s assistants approached.
One said, “All right, Franklin. Ready to go?”
“Hey, Jade.” Franklin caught Jade’s wrist and held his gaze. “Take care of Selena.”
“You have my word.”
“I don’t just mean guard her. Take care of her. One soldier to another, she’s not like you and me, you know?”
Jade rested a hand on Franklin’s shoulder. “I know. Heal fast.”
“Next time you see me, I’ll be running again.”
“I believe you.”
Jade stepped back, and Selena bent to hug Franklin. “Thank you so much for everything.”
“Like I said, it’s my duty. Listen to him, Selena, even if he sounds like a damn drill instructor and you feel like punching him in the jaw.”
“I will. I mean I’ll try to listen to him, but I won’t punch him. It’s against my religion.”
“So that’s the only reason?” Jade raised an eyebrow.
