Demon’s Grotto

Thinking her insane, neighbors were leery of her. They didn’t know the truth about her past, nor did they fully understand the doctor’s obsession. They didn’t want to, for fear that their relatively peaceful lives would be destroyed. She knew they wouldn’t believe a word against the doctor, not that she had wanted to speak against him — until now.

At the madhouse, the doctor was among the few members of staff who treated the patients with any semblance of kindness. He had been especially gentle with Cora, but she’d still feared him. Not only did she sense his power, both physical and mental, but she sensed that he desired her. The look of passion in a man’s eyes was something she’d known and feared for most of her life. She thought such fear had finally ended with the death of her stepfather, but within the confines of the madhouse it wasn’t uncommon for jailers to take advantage of their position. Being young and attractive, Cora was often the target of unscrupulous guards.

Cyril had taken her away from all that and into a situation that she imagined would be far worse. Yet during the past two months at the mansion, he hadn’t touched her. His only interest was in his work, and Cora realized she’d been wrong to think his passion had been directed at her. It was the thirst for knowledge and scientific greatness that illuminated those vivid blue eyes.

During her time alone with Doctor Damp, Cora had seen revolting and disturbing things, but none that terrified her as much as the doctor’s most recent experiment. It was the culmination of years of work started by another man — a certain doctor from Geneva — whom Damp held in awe. He spoke of the man as he would a lover, except all their passion had been reserved for their wicked science.
