Jade settled into a more comfortable position with the instrument. He strummed a bit before singing.
Selena’s heartbeat quickened. He had a lovely voice, even if the song was rather haunting about a prisoner who killed his captors only to spend the rest of his life on the run. The group seemed to like it, though.
Selena and Jade left the gathering before it fully broke up.
“Why didn’t you tell me you played guitar?” Selena asked on their way back to the house.
He shrugged. “I don’t really call that playing well.”
“It was good.”
“I’m out of practice. When Shayne and I were younger, we used to play more.”
“You guys are close, aren’t you?”
“He’s a good friend.”
They fell silent for a few moments. Selena shivered. It was a cool night with a gentle breeze. Now that they were away from the bonfire, there was a chill in the air.
Jade’s arm settled around her, and he tugged her close. She smiled. Now she was warmer in so many ways.
“How about you? Do you have any particular friends at the commune?”
“Elspeth and Rayne.”
“Rayne. A priestess?”
“No. He’s a priest.”
“Ah. Is he —Forget it.”
“What?”
“It doesn’t matter.”
She guessed where his thoughts were, but decided not to prompt him.
“All right, it matters,” he finally said. “Were you and he—”
“Were we what?”
“Lovers.”
