Excerpt:
Dougal flexed the muscles in his right thigh, checking the injury. It ached, but the pain had mostly subsided. Slaine’s poultices seemed to numb the worst of the pain, making movement bearable. He pushed up on his right arm, careful not to move the left, and angled his body until he could get both legs off the side of the bed. Pain shot through his left shoulder. Dougal clenched his teeth around a moan and forced himself onto his feet.
Slaine chose that moment to knock lightly and enter the room with a tray of food and ale. She stopped mid-stride, scowled at him, then stomped over to slam the tray down onto the chest beside the bed. Ale sloshed over the rim of the cup and spilled onto the food.
She spun to glare at him with hands on her hips. “What do ye think yer doing, then? Trying to undo all the healing work I’ve done?” The gold flared in her chestnut eyes and her cheeks flushed. She took a deep breath which stretched the dark blue fabric of her gown tight across her breasts, drawing his eyes.
Dougal’s cock twitched. Damnation, she was gorgeous when angered. So passionate. She didn’t show any fear when she was around him. His heart quickened, and if his leg didn’t hurt so much from standing there, he might have taken her into his arms.
A foolish thought. A bonny woman like Slaine should stay far away from him so her reputation wouldna be tarnished. Hamish no doubt intended to marry her to a titled lord to enrich his holdings. Someone like Dougal, but without the black shadow hanging over every part of his name and land. A headache began to throb behind his eyes. He squeezed the back of his neck and winced.
The fire slipped from her eyes and she stepped forward to cup his cheeks.
Dougal sucked in a breath at the unexpected contact. He smelled the hint of her rose scented bath and felt every brush of her breasts against his when she breathed. Desire coiled in his gut. Had he ever been drawn to a woman like this?
Slaine stilled as she met his gaze. Her cheeks flushed. She didn’t drop her hands. Instead, she traced the shape of his cheekbones with her thumbs and her gaze found his lips.
Would her kiss be soft and inexperienced? Or as fiery and passionate as he knew she could be? He leaned down a fraction, intent on finding out.
