Excerpt from Through My Heart
Her beauty overwhelmed me. Why was a creature like this selling herself on the street? Yes, she was a prostitute, a slave, but surely her master saw that she was a rare commodity. She didn’t belong here.
“Are you ready?” she asked.
“Are you?”
“I have no choice, and it no longer matters.”
“Why do you despair? You’re young and beautiful.”
She furrowed her brow, a hint of anger in her eyes. “Why do I despair? Look at my life. I would rather be dead than live here another second.”
The scent reached me again—pungent. The mountain of death loomed over the city. Her wish might soon come true.
“Please. Take what you want and get it over with.”
