Excerpt of the Week:
Cloak and Dagger
by Saloni Quinby
Shane awoke with a throbbing headache and a stiff neck.
No wonder.
He was seated in a wooden chair, his arms bound behind him and his ankles chained.
“Finally awake?” asked a rough male voice.
Shane strained to glance behind him, but he couldn’t turn enough to see his captor.
A slim man with eyes as black as his elbow-length hair stepped in front of him. Even before the man smiled, revealing the glistening tips of his small fangs, Shane knew what he was. After so many years of hunting vampires, he had learned to sense them. Usually when he met one of the monsters, he wasn’t in such a precarious position.
“I trust you slept well,” the vampire continued. “I told my men to be careful with you and your brother.”
Shane instinctively wanted to ask about Adrian, but he had long ago learned to curb his urges. Vampires thrived on fear and control as much as on blood.
“Don’t worry. He’s quite well and still human.” The vampire smiled wickedly. “I know that’s your greatest fear as well as Adrian’s. To become what you hunt. I still can’t believe that after so many centuries I’ve found you. By the time I realized the man I’d seen when I infiltrated my blood son’s dreams was his mortal lover, the man was long dead.” The creature reached out to caress Shane’s face. Though he tried to jerk away, his bonds prevented him from eluding the vampire’s repulsive touch. “Not only do you look exactly like him, but you have his…tastes. Perfect. You’ll be absolutely perfect.”
